Abstract

1372091 Steam and spray irons GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 Oct 1971 46611/71 Heading D1A In a steam iron having a steam powered liquid spray means 42 in which steam and water are mixed before issueing from a single outlet 52, control means 82 is provided to vary the steam quantity through the mixer to change the liquid spray flow rate. The iron shown has a conventional water drip valve 22 operated by a button 28 to provide steam or dry ironing, a steam generator 18, a steam pressure regulator 38, a pressure equalising tube 36 connecting the steam generator with the top of a water reservoir 20 and a thermostat setting knob 17. The spray means comprises a water tube 48 with one end at the bottom of the reservoir and the other end secured to a mixer 76 within a short steam tube 44. Steam passes through a transverse bore 79 into the mixer 76, mixes with water drawn from the orifice 88 and issues as a spray through a bore 78 and the outlet 52. The flow of steam is controlled by a stepped or conical pin 82, which is spring urged against a gasket 74 within a cap 50 which has an ear 70 by which it is movable axially on rotation of a knob 54 having a cam surface 56, through a link 58 and lever 62/68. Reduction of the steam flow increases the flow of water until the edge of the gasket 74 closes the opening 52.
