1370336 Refuse receptacles THORVALD SALICATH ROSS JNR 14 Oct 1971 [29 April 1971] 47753/71 Heading A4A A cover suitable for covering an opening at the top of a hollow holder for refuse, comprises an elongated ram 16 which is for compacting refuse and which extends through an aperture 96, and a ball-and-socket joint 14 closing the remainder of the aperture 96, the ball-andsocket joint 14 permitting the ram to move longitudinally of itself and angularly relative to the remainder of the cover. As shown, the aperture 96 is provided in a transparent shield 12 slidably mounted above a hole 10 of transparent lid 4. The ram 16 comprises a tubular handle 102 closed at its lower end by a shell 106 having an end-closure member 108 provided with pointed projections. Refuse is compacted by placing the member 108 on the refuse and thrusting a shaft 104 into the handle 102 to strike the inside surface of the member 108. In the form shown the cover is pivotally mounted on a funnel 6 by screws 76. The funnel 6 includes a downwardly extending flange 30 which surrounds a lip 20 on the top edge of a hollow holder 8. The portion 22 of the lip 20 is inclined for engagement with the inclined wall of a section 26 of the funnel. In the modified form of Fig. 5 (not shown) the funnel (45) has a flange (46) which engages a lip (44) of the holder (42); in the modified form of Fig. 6 (not shown) the funnel (54) includes a section (60) having a flat portion (62) which engages the upper edge (65) of the holder (52). A flange (66) for use as a handle is provided on the holder (52). The holder (152) of Fig. 10 (not shown) may be used instead of the holder 8 and comprises a base (154) and three sides (156, 158, 160). The fourth side (162) is attached to the side (156) by hinges (164); a latch mechanism (168) is provided. The refuse receptacle of Fig. 11 (not shown) is similar to the refuse receptacle of Fig. 2 but the container (174) is a flexible plastics bag. The top edge (176) of the container (174) is folded over the lip (20), and the funnel (6) rests on the holder (8). If desired the container may be retained by tying a cord around the edge (176). The refuse receptacle of Fig. 12 (not shown) has a holder (180) which includes a funnel-like upper portion (184). The refuse receptacle of Fig. 14 (not shown) has a lid (190) including a door part (194) pivoted to a major part (192) by hinges (196). A disposable container 38 is positioned in the holder 8 and may be made of a bio-degradable paper. The container 38 comprises a bottom wall and four upstanding panels 120, 122, 124, 126, Fig. 7, joined at vertical edges 134, 136, 138, 140. The container may have moisture-resistant layers on the inner and outer surfaces; the bottom wall may be sealed with a moisture-resistant adhesive. The container is of rectangular horizontal cross-section and has a line 128 at the junction between an upper section 118 and a lower section 116 to indicate a refusefilling line. The container may be folded to a flat collapsed configuration for storage by folding along lines 114 and edges 134 &c. Notches 132 enable the side panels 122 and 126 of the filled container to be folded down; the panel 122 overlaps the panel 126 and a strip of adhesive tape (142) Fig. 8 (not shown) is applied. The resulting upstanding flaps (150, 151) are rolled outwardly to provide hand-grips, Fig. 9 (not shown). The container (198) of Fig. 15 (not shown) is similar to the container 38 of Fig. 7 but has hand-holes (216) provided in the end panels (208, 210).
