1370283 Grinding ANDREW MASTER HONES Ltd 12 Nov 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 45774/70 Heading B3D A method of grinding a cylindrical workpiece, such as a crank-shaft, comprises exposing a part of the surface of the workpiece, embracing the exposed surface with a portable fixture 1 which carries a rotary grinding member 4, rotating the workpiece within the fixture, rotating the grinding wheel, and bringing the grinding wheel into contact with the workpiece, the axis of rotation of the grinding member being substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the workpiece. The fixture 1 has an arcuate recess 2 for embracing the workpiece and a plate 3 mounts bearings for engaging the workpiece, the bearings being in the form of collets or segmental parts. A frame 5 is mounted on a pivot 6 on the fixture and carries the grinding wheel 4 which is mounted in one or other of apertures 19 and rotated by a friction drive consisting of a rubber or like roller 14 driven by a pneumatic hydraulic or electric motor. The grinding wheel is fed towards the workpiece by a screw 8 rotated by a hand wheel 9 to a position determined by an adjustable stop 12, 13. Gauges 18 measure the workpiece during grinding. The grinding wheel may be traversed during grinding or be of adjustable width and consist of a plurality of mitred wheels.
