1370191 Burners DR SCHMITZ & APELT INDUSTRIEOFENBAU GmbH 11 Feb 1972 [18 March 1971] 6563/72 Heading F4T A burner for liquid or gaseous fuels comprises a fuel outlet (16), Fig. 1 (not shown), surrounded by a swirl chamber 9 definedat its outlet by a convergent-divergent constriction 12, 13 and an air inlet means 17 providing a substantially tangential air flow into the swirl chamber 9, the acoustic capacity and/or the acoustic inductivity, of the burner being variable. The acoustic capacity is varied by a longitudinally slidable rear wall (20) of the swirl chamber, Fig. 2 (not shown). The acoustic inductance may be varied either by means of a ring of air inlet holes (18), Fig. 1 (not shown), in the. swirl chamber which holes can be closed or opened by a ring (19), or by a slidable cover-plate 23 and an opening 22 at the rear end of the swirl chamber. To prevent the incoming air from apertures 22, 18 from interfering with combustion a pump 25 is used whose pressure side is connected to a tubular channel 24 surrounding the burner, and the suction side connected via conduit 27 and a valve 28 to a zone in the swirl chamber directly upstream of the fuel outlet. The valve 28 is adjustable so that selective amounts of air can be removed from the combustion zone. Apertures 22 and 18 may be covered by a wire screen. The fuel supply means may be such that oil and/ or gas can be burnt in the combustion chamber.
