Controllers with powder resistances.-An automatic motor or like controller consists of are. sistance in the form of divided magnetic material placed in a. magnetic field produced by a winding f. As shown, iron filings, fragments or dust b are contained in a porcelain tube a mounted inside the winding f and immersed in an insulating liquid such as petroleum, which has access to the material through contact plugs k to separate the particles where the field is reduced. The contact plugs and sheaths j are of magnetic material to make good contact. The controller may be connected in series with the armature of a continuous or alternating current motor, or used for compounding a continuous or alternating current generator or as an automatic voltage regulator. A direct or inverse compound winding may be combined with the winding f.
