Abstract
1369907 Splitting H DARDA 11 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971 30 July 1971] 1285/72 Heading B5E [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for the mechanical disintegration of rock, stone or the like comprises a cylinder block, a longitudinally movable hydraulically operated piston mounted in the cylinder and operable to introduce a sliding wedge 1, Fig. 1, between inserts 2 which are inserted into a bore hole, the front end of the wedge having uniform tapering surfaces 1a corresponding in inclination to sliding surfaces 2a on the inserts, the inserts or wedge and the inserts having axially-extending grooves 1c and tongues 2c which interengage when the wedge is in its retracted position. The grooves and tongues in effect reinforce the crosssectional area of the inserts whereby the sliding surfaces 1a, 2a extend to the section B-B, instead of to the section A-A in apparatus without the tongues and grooves, and so permit further expansion of the inserts upon advance of the wedge. The surfaces 2a of the inserts may be covered with hard metal. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the tapering surfaces 3a of the wedge 3 extend substantially the full length of the wedge, and the grooves 3c are parallel in an intermediate region D and inclined in a region E. The tongues 4c on the inserts 4 are also parallel and inclined in the regions D, E, respectively. In a third embodiment, Fig. 11, the wedge 5 has tapering surfaces 5a and parallel surfaces 5b which co-operate with inclined surfaces 6a and parallel surfaces 6b, respectively, in the inserts. Inclined grooves 5c are formed on the wedge and co-operate with inclined tongues 5d on the inserts whereby the intermediate and front parts of the inserts are forced apart simultaneously with advance of the wedge. In the construction shown in Fig. 20, the sliding surfaces 9c of the grooves 9f in the wedge merge into sliding surfaces 9d at the rear of the wedge. The inclined surfaces 10a engaged by the tapered surfaces 9a of the wedge extend in front of the wedge and interengage 10c, 10d. The leading end of the wedge may be rounded or truncated. The outside diameter of the inserts may be increased by packings or shims 13, Fig. 25, which at the leading end engage the inserts by means of projections 13a or opposed ribs and grooves, and at the rear end by lugs (13b, Fig. 26, not shown). The inserts may also be provided from moving axially relative to one another by a pin engaging holes in the leading ends of the inserts.
