1433691 Splitting H DARDA 14 June 1974 [16 July 1973] 26545/74 Heading B5E [Also in Division E1] Apparatus for splitting rock comprises a slider wedge 14 connected to a piston-rod 12 of an hydraulic ram, a hollow member 20 connected to the ram and surrounding axially interlocking heads 30, 38 of presser cheeks 18, 16, the head 30 being supported for lateral movement within the hollow member and having a U- shaped axial cross-section with arms 36 straddling the wedge 14, and the head 38 having a T- shaped longitudinal cross-section with a crossbar 40 resting on the head 30 and a reduced neck portion 42 which is straddled by the arms 36 of the head 30. A guide sleeve 22 having axially spaced end face portions and a disc 24 are inserted within the hollow member so that the cross-bar 40 is supported on the disc 24 in abutting relationship with the end face portion of the sleeve 22 nearest the ram. The head 30 is supported on a disc 28 mounted on two inwardly directed shoulders (50) of the hollow member 20 and a resilient disc 26 retains the cheeks 16, 18 in contact with the wedge. The head 38 is radially located within the member 20 by a lug 46 and the slider wedge is pivotally connected to the piston-rod 12 by a pin 52 whose ends engage in elongate slots in the piston-rod. The size of the slots are selected so that when the piston-rod is advanced, the end face 54 of the wedge and the end face of the piston-rod abut one another. The slider wedge and the lower portions of the presser cheeks may be symmetrically or asymmetrically constructed and the surfaces of the above are hardened.
