1369477 Open end spinning WILHELM STAHLECKER GmbH 23 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 60058/71 Heading DID [Also in Division F2] An open-end spinning machine includes means to engage a brake with the rotor shaft simultaneously with the disengagement of a friction drive wheel from the shaft. When arm 4, Fig. 1, is pivoted about pivot 5 to raise drive wheel 1 from rotor shaft 9, the armmounted screw 4, 5 is lowered to bear on cantilever spring 12 to simultaneously press spring-mounted brake shoes 12,1 onto the shaft. The arm is pivoted by the opening of the rotor cover. The shaft is supported in the nip of two pairs of discs 10, 11, and the wheel is pressed onto the shaft by the weight of armmounted drive motor 3 and by spring 8. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, the rotation of member 23 raises arm 4 about pivot 17.3, and bears on spring 12 to simultaneously press shoes 12.1 onto shaft 9. The arm-mounted drive wheel is rotated by belt 20. In a third embodiment, Fig. 7, arm 4 is raised about pivot 5 by member 15,5x to lift belt-driven drive wheel 1 from shaft 9, and arm-mounted member 4c is lowered to bear on spring 12 to simultaneously press brake shoes 12.2 onto shaft 9. In a fourth embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) a vertical rotor shaft is mounted in air bearings, and when a friction drive wheel is moved from engagement with a shaft collar brake shoes are simultaneously pressed against the shaft. The drive wheel, the movable mounting of the drive wheel, the rotor shaft bearings, the brake and a thrust bearing of one shaft and may be removed as a unit from the machine. To impart thrust to the shaft 9, the axes of the discs 10,11 or the axis of the drive wheel may be supported non-parallel to the shaft axes, or the discs may have a tapered periphery. A thrust bearing for the shaft 9 may comprise, Fig. 3, a ring 24 rotating in sump 18.1 and supported by axle 27 and members 25, 26.
