Abstract

1369333 Knitting VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT LEGKOGO I TEXTILNOGO MASHINOSTROENIA "VNIILTEKMASH" 28 June 1972 [6 July 1971 (2)] 30169/72 Headings D1C and D1K A circular knitted article e.g. a stocking is closed on a knitting machine by linking. Selected needles, or groups of needles are active on opposite sides of the needle cylinder alternately so that the linking yarn zig-zags across the fabric. Not more than two needles or groups are active per revolution or reciprocation. Thus in Figure 1b a yarn 17 is taken by needles 1, 3, 15, 5..in turn at the commencement of a stocking toe. In a modification the yarn may progress from one end of the closure to the other and return. Two yarns may be used. Starting courses follow the linking yarn, which as it is pulled tight, draws loops 25, 27..and 26, 28.. together. Closed loops B of the linking yarn are opened when tightened, crossing corresponding loops-Fig. 3b. If yarn 17 is elastic it straightens. If a welt to toe stocking is to be closed the linking yarn 17 forms tuck stitches 32 see Fig. 8a on the selected needles, and is followed by a final course of loops.
