Abstract

1368945 Pipe couplings J L WHEELER 31 Jan 1972 [31 Oct 1970] 51872/70 Heading F2G [Also in Division E2] In a pipe coupling, e.g. between an exhaust manifold 1 and the exhaust pipe 2 of a motor vehicle, one flange plate 9 is of U form so that it can be placed over enlarged end 4 and drawn towards plate 6 to seal the flared end of pipe 2 against enlarged end 4. Plate 6 is brazed to a reinforcing sleeve 5 before the latter is welded to pipe 2. A curved rod (15) is welded to the heads of bolts (14) to prevent them from rotating, when nuts (16) are tightened. The sleeve 5 may be omitted and the plate 6 fitted directly to the flared end of pipe 2.
