Abstract
1368747 Electro-depositing chromium-iron BRITISH NON-FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 23 Nov 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 60357/70 Addition to 1144913 Heading C7B Cr-Fe co-deposit or alloy is electro-deposited from a solution of trivalent Cr, Fe and halide ions in a homogeneous mixture of water and a dipolar organic compound containing a highly electronegative oxygen atom activated by an adjacent electron-donating atom or group; examples of such compounds are dimethyl sulphoxide, tetrahydrothiophen dioxide (sulpholane), formamide, acetamide, N-methyl formamide, dimethylformamide or - acetamide, tetramethylurea and tertiary butyl formamide. Preferably the solution also contains ammonium ion e.g. NH 4 Cl, boric acid, concentrated dialkyl (e.g. C5-7) phthalate, and surfactant e.g. cetyl trimethylammonium bromide; the Cr and Fe ions are preferably added as CrCl 3 , 6H 2 O and FeCl 2 , 4H 2 O with NaCl or CaCl 2 to increase halide ion concentration. To avoid chlorine evolution the anode may be immersed in an anolyte separated from the plating solution by a porous diaphragm. Specification 1368748 is referred to.
