Abstract

1367766 Pressure-sensitive transfer elements COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MFG CO Inc 2 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 60216/70 Heading D2B A pressure-sensitive transfer element comprises a flexible pre-treated polyolefin film provided with a first undercoating comprising a cured polyurethane resin, a second undercoating comprising a thermoplastic polymer on the first undercoating, and a top layer of a microporous thermoplastic polymer sponge containing within its pores a pressure-exudable ink comprising an oily vehicle and colouring matter. The polyolefin film pre-treatment consists of partial oxidation of one or both surfaces of the film by flame or corona discharge. The polyloefin may be polyethylene or polypropylene. The polyurethane undercoating may also contain a thermoplastic polymer, preferably a vinyl polymer or a cellulose ester. Suitable thermoplastic polymers for the second undercoating and microporous sponge layer are vinyl polymers, cellulose esters, polyesters, and polyamides. The reverse side of the film may also be provided with a polyurethane undercoating on which may be printed a design in one or more colours.
