Abstract

1367638 Mass spectrometers G W BALL 30 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 53864/70 Heading H1D A mass spectrometer has an ion filter comprising a cylindrical ceramic body 1 having an axial passage 2, the sides of the passage being at least partially defined by at least one convex hyperbolic surface 3 which is plated with a metallic material 6 which is not electrically connected to the platings of the adjacent hyperbolic surfaces (if any). The body 1 is of high (e.g. 98%) alumina ceramic and the platings 6 are of gold. The ends of each plating 6 are joined by a gold plating strip 7 extending across the end faces of the body 1 and along a longitudinal groove 8 in the external surface of the body. Opposite platings 6 are connected together by a gold strip 9 located in a circumferential groove 10 and provided with a connecting wire 12. Insulating pads 14 of glass and ceramic frit are provided at crossing points of the strips where contact is not desired. The filter may be mounted in the spectrometer described in Specification 51785/70 in conjunction with shorter pre- and post-filters of otherwise identical construction. R.F. and D.C. are applied to the main filter and R.F. alone to the pre-and post-filters. The filter may have any multiple of four hyperbolic surfaces 3, or a single hyperbolic surface (Fig. 5, not shown) co-operating with two flat surfaces.
