Abstract
1367332 Clay guns for furnace tap holes DES ANICENS ETABS PAUL WURTH SA 18 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970 3 June 1971] 53708/71 Heading F4B A clay gun 1 is supported at one corner C of a quadrilateral linkage having three movable arms. A fixed arm 4 is secured to a base 16, between a pillar 19 forming a pivot A for an arm 3 supporting the clay gun, and a pivot B for a controlling arm 5. The fourth arm of the linkage is formed by part of the clay gun. The pillar 19 is inclined to the vertical, preferably perpendicular to the tap hole axis. The clay gun 1 is supported by pivot pins 27 in a fork 24 pivoted to the support arm 3, and adjustable links 25 enable the gun to swing about the pivots 27. The control arm 5 is adjustable in length by means of a screwed sleeve 11 so that the gun may be swung about the pivot of the fork 24, so that small variations in the position of the taphole can be compensated. A piston 20 pivoted to the arm 3 at 23 enables the gun to be moved through the path shown in Fig. 3. The operating piston may be linked to the support arm 5 through a stirrup pivoted to the piston at an intermediate point, to the base at one end, and to a link pivoted on the support arm at the other end, so that the clay gun can be swung through 180 degrees, Figs. 8-10 (not shown). The hydraulic piston 20 is connected to operate as a differential piston to move the clay gun to and from the washing position, and as a direct pressure cylinder to hold the clay gun against the tap hole. The operating fluid for the mud piston of the clay gun is fed to the gun through the pivot of the fork 24, Fig. 7, which is supported on the end of the arm 3 by roller bearings to reduce the effect of the reactive force of the clay gun. The pressure fluid flows in and out through pipes 55, 56 housed in the supporting arm 3, and these are connected through passages in a valve body within the pivot of the fork 24 to passages 45, 44 connected to the clay gun piston. A similar device is arranged at the pivot point A. The hydraulic control system is remote from the furnace, and may include an electro-hydraulic power-drive system, and/or an hydraulic accumulator so that the fluid supply can be maintained in case of current failure. Several tap hole plugging units may be supplied from a single accumulator.
