Actuating fluid being admitted to the rear end of the cylinder 9, the piston 13 is moved forwardly, carrying with it the sleeve 14. This, through the nut 15, rotates the rod 18 and drilling tool 20, and at the same time advances said tool to the work. When the piston reaches the limit of its forward stroke, the nut 15 engages with the head 29 of the tappet rod 28, thereby actuating the lever 26 to reverse the valve 11. Upon the back stroke of the piston, the sleeve 14 and nut 15 are retracted to an extent equal to the full travel of the piston 13; butl the rod' 18 and the drilling tool Q0 have only a limited retraction owing to the fact that as soon as the clutch balls 21 engage with the tapered part 25 of the sleeve 24,
` said rod 18 will be clamped sufficiently tight to prevent any further backward movement, although still permitting it to be rotated by the backward movement of the nut 15.
The exhaust from the cylinder is caused to be discharged through the drill for the purpose of blowing out the clay as it is cut by the drill.
The drill is provided with a suspension system which consists of a flexible cord or cable` 38 attached thereto, which extends upwardly and over suitable guiding pulleys 39, and thence downwardly to a winding shaft 40 (see Fig. 2). The suspension sysvtem also comprises the two links 41 which are connected to the central portion of the drill casing at their lower ends, and at their upper ends are pivoted to a suitable bracket 42 secured to the bustle pipe 4.
43 designates a hook which is pivoted to the drill casing and which, when the drill is in operative position, as shown in full lines in Figure 1, is adapted to be engaged with the shaft 7a of the dogs 7, thereby holding the drill in proper relation to the tapping hole 6.
After the tapping operation is completed, the cord or cable 38 is wound on the shaft 40, thereby swinging the drill upwardly until it assumes the suspended position shown in full lines in Figure 2 and in dotted lines in Figure 1. In this position, it is suiiiciently elevated to be entirely out of the way of other operations around the base of the furnace.
My invention provides very simple and desirable apparatus for the purpose for which it is intended. It can be readily moved into'position and set in operation, after which it continues to operate until the tapping hole is drilled out, without necessil'tating the presence of workmen in the immediate vicinity of the tapping hole. Vhen the tapping out operation is finished, the
.device can be readily moved to its inoperative position, where it remains until it is again desired to use it.

Blast furnace tapping apparatus comprising a rotatable drill, and suspension means therefor comprising a plurality of links pivotally connected at each end and arranged to permit the drill to be swung into substantially horizontal tapping position or into substantially vertical inoperative position, substantially as described.
Blast furnace tapping apparatus comprising a drill, and suspension means therefor arranged to permit the drill to be swung into and out of tapping position, said suspension means comprising spaced links pivoted at their lower ends to spaced points on the drill and at their upper ends to spaced points on a bustle pipe, substantially as described.
3. Blast furnace tapping apparatus comprising a drill, and suspension means therefor arranged to permit the drill to be swung into and out of tapping position, -said suspension means comprising links pivoted at their lower ends to the drill and at their upper ends to an overhead support, whereby the drill may lie in substantially horizontal position below the support or in substantially vertical inoperative position at one side of the support, together with a flexible connection for raising and lowering the apparatus and for holding the drill suspended in its inoperative position, substantially as described.
4. Blast furnace tapping apparatus comprising a drill, spaced links forming a suspension for the drill and causing the same to move to an overhead position through a predetermined path, other suspending means for the drill, and spaced means for holding the drill temporarily in operative relationship to the tapping out hole of a blast furnace, substantially as described.
5. Drilling apparatus comprising a cylinder, a piston arranged to reciprocate in said cylinder, a sleeve to which the piston is secured, a nut carried by said sleeve, a spirally grooved rod engaging said nut and having a drill socket, and means controlled by said sleeve for automatically reversing the direction of travel of said piston, substantially as described.
G. Drilling apparatus comprising a cylinder, a piston arranged to reciprocate in said cylinder, a sleeve member to which the piston is secured, a nut carried by the sleeve member, and a spirally grooved rod engaging said nut and having a drill socket, together with means for directing the exhaust from said cylinder through said rod and drill socket, substantially as described.
7. Drilling apparatus comprising a cylinder, a piston arranged to reciprocate in said cylinder, a sleeve member to which the piston is secured, a nut carried by the sleeve member, and a spirally grooved rod engaging said nut and having a drill socket, vtogether with a conduit connected to the eX- haust of the cylinder and leading through said rod and drill socket, substantially as described.
8. Drilling` apparatus comprising a cylinder, a piston arranged to reciprocate in the cylinder, a sleeve member to which the piston is secured, a nut carried by the sleeve member, a spirally grooved rod engaging said nut and having a drill socket, and a clutch device for normally preventing the return movement of said rod upon the return stroke of the piston, substantially as described.
9. Blast furnace tapping apparatus, comprising a bustle pipe, suspension means pivotally connected at spaced points to said pipe, a drill pivotally connected to said suspension means, and means for swinging the drill into and out of operative position With the furnace, substantially as described.
