Abstract
1365171 Planetary coolers F L SMIDTH & CO AS 18 Dec 1972 [17 Jan 1972] 2138/72 Heading F4B A planetary cooler for material leaving a rotary kiln 1 consists of an array of cylindrical cooling tubes 6, each having trough-shaped conveyer flights 11 helically mounted on the inner wall and extending to the outlet end of the tube but being spaced from the inlet end by a distance of between twice and five times the diameter of the tube. As shown the tubes may surround the kiln near the outlet end, inclining upwardly. Alternatively they may incline downwardly or be separate from the kiln. Material from the kiln enters the cooling tube through a shoot 5 having a refractory lining. The inlet end of each cooling tube has a heat-resisting lining 14 and an area 16 with an uneven surface formed of raised plates which help to prevent the material flowing backwards. Troughs 12 are designed to push the material along the tube and conveyer flights 11 lift the material and let it fall in curtains so that there is a good exchange of heat between the material and the cooling air. In a modification (Figs. 6-8, not shown) the troughs 12 are omitted and the lifting flights are divided longitudinally into two sections by a zone of non-lifting transporting troughs.
