Abstract

1364998 Producing Ti or Zr NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP and UNITED STATES STEEL CORP 15 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 58073/72 Heading C7D Titanium or zirconium are produced by reacting a tetrahalide with 45-55% of the stoichiometric amount of alkali metal; continuously mixing the product with further alkali metal at 100-200‹ C to effect 55-95% reduction; compacting the mixer product at below 100‹ C to form a rod without further reduction; and heating the rod to above 800‹ C to complete the reduction, sinter the metal particles and melt the salt by-product.
