Abstract

1364302 Coating with Pb and Sn F HECK 8 Oct 1971 [28 Nov 1970] 46916/71 Heading C7F Articles of Cu or Cu-based alloys contained in a rotating drum are dipped in molten Pb or Pb-Sn alloy rich in Pb, and subsequently in molten Sn or Sn-Pb alloy rich in Sn. The process may be performed in one heat, or with intermediate cooling; the resulting coating is readily solderable, and outward diffusion of Zn from a brass substrate is inhibited by barrier action of the Pb coating. In modifications (1) the first layer is applied by rotating the articles in a barrel of Pb (or Pb-Sn) powder, with or without fluxes, and for the second layer, Sn powder is added in the amount required to give the correct aggregate Pb/Sn ratio (2) the first layer is applied from a PbCl 2 melt or (3) Pb is applied electrolytically.
