Abstract

1364207 Reactor control rods HOCHTEMPERATUB - KERNKRAFTWERK GmbH (HKG) 7 March 1972 [16 March 1971] 10606/72 Heading G6C A control rod for a gas-cooled nuclear reactor of the kind employing spherical fuel elements contains safety insert means, e.g. a slack cable 13, attached to both ends of the rod for maintaining interconnection between the ends of the rod in the event of the rod fracturing. The control rod consists of an upper thrust rod 2 and a lower absorber part 3, the latter having two concentrically arranged walls 4 and 5, e.g. of alloy steel, enclosing between them absorber material 6. A cooling channel 7 extends axially of the control rod, cooling gas entering through openings 8 in the upper end of the rod and leaving through slots 10 in the rounded lower end 9. The effluent gas penetrates between the spherical fuel elements 11 of the reactor core 12. The cable 13 is attached at its two ends to the control rod by means of threaded bolts 14. In an alternative arrangement, the safety insert means comprises a rod or tube in place of the cable 13.
