Abstract

800,397. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Aug. 23,1956 [Aug. 26, 1955], No. 25739/56. Class 39(4). A fuel element for a nuclear reactor comprises a bar of fissile or fertile material disposed within and adapted to be cooled by conductive heat transfer to a gas-tight sheath, the bar being provided with cavities communicating with the interface between the bar and the sheath, the cavities being adapted to receive gases evolved during operation and thereby to limit fluid pressure within the sheath. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the uranium bar comprises a number of cylindrical sections 1, 2, 3, the end surfaces of which are of part spherical form. The sections are enclosed by a sheath 8, and a coaxial bore 7 extends through the length of the bar. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the bar is provided with a series of diametrical holes arranged at intervals along the bar, successive holes being at right angles to each other. The sheath may be provided with three radial pins (not shown in Fig. 1) to centralise the fuel element in a channel in the reactor. The reactor should preferably be operated with the coolant at a pressure of at least 14 atmospheres and preferably at 20 atmospheres so that the sheath is forced against the bar.
