Abstract

975,908. Nuclear reactors. GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE STERKRADE A. G. April 14, 1961 [April 16, 1960], No. 13561/61. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor utilizes as a first moderator, heavy water contained in tubes dispersed in a mass of a second different moderator, fuel elements being disposed inside the tubes containing the heavy water moderator. In the embodiment illustrated, tubes 2 of pure aluminium containing heavy water are distributed throughout an annular zone in a second moderator comprising graphite rods 3 of hexagonal cross-section. The rods 3 lie within a cylinder of diameter d coaxial with the pressure vessel 1,d being about 8/11ths of the internal diameter of the vessel 1, each rod 3 having a longitudinal bore through which extends an aluminium tube 4. Similar tubes 4 are uniformly distributed in each of the tubes 2. Solid graphite rods 5 lie between the rods 3 and the vessel 1 to form a reflector. Fuel elements (not shown) are supported within the aluminium tubes 4, through which tubes a coolant may be passed, The vessel 1 is surrounded by a lead thermal shield 6 through which extend tubes conducting cooling water and a concrete biological shield (not shown). The fuel may be natural uranium which would not be possible if the heavy water was housed in a single tank having necessarily thick walls. Such reactors, employing heavy water and graphite as moderators, have a much higher conversion ratio (U<SP>238</SP> to Pu<SP>239</SP>) than do reactors employing only graphite.
