Abstract

789,117. Nuclear reactors. STICHTING REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND. July 16, 1956 [July 18, 1955], No. 21930/56. Class 39(4). In a reactor having fissile material in suspension or solution in ordinary or heavy water, the water is evaporated in a reaction zone 3. The walls of this zone, the reflector surrounding it, and any solid structure within the reaction zone, are constructed of graphite. Graphite is preferred to zirconium, which is expensive, and to aluminium, which has to be coated to prevent corrosion, the coating increasing absorption of neutrons. A pressure shell 1 surrounds the reactor and is lined at 11 with an insulator to prevent electrolytic corrosion. Steam from the reaction zone 3 passes through a separating zone 4 and a bed of Berl saddles 10 to remove fissile suspension, and a channel 6 to produce mechanical energy or for heating. Water is returned to the reactor through pipes 7 and finds its way back to a mixing zone 2 through reflector blocks of graphite 5, where its presence augments the moderating effect of the graphite and through the separating zone 4 where it washes down any fissile material deposited on horizontal surfaces. The fissile material is uranium which may be enriched with U<SP>235</SP> or U<SP>233</SP> or Pu<SP>239</SP> and may include Th<SP>232</SP>. Specification 789,937 is referred to.
