Abstract
1364148 Automatic sintering control CENTRE DE RECHEKCHES METALLURGIQUES 18 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 48082/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division G3] A continuous process for sintering iron ore is automatically. controlled by at least three closed loop systems: (a) the gas permeability of the sintered material is measured, compared with a reference P<0> and the error used to regulate the addition of water to the process input, (b) a "magnetic index" of the sintered material is measured, compared with a reference (MI)<0> and the error used to regulate the fuel supplied to the process, and (c) the position of the breakthrough of the flame front is measured, compared with a reference (PP)‹ and the error used to regulate either the speed of a belt which conveys the material through the process or the speed of a ventilating fan. In the embodiment there is a fourth loop in which the weight of a hopper of return fines, either from the process alone or from the process plus those from a subsequent blast furnace, is compared with a reference value (PT)‹ and the error used to regulate the quantity of return fines fed to the process. The weight of the hopper is deduced from continuous measurement of the weight of return fines fed to it and those leaving it. This error is also used to regulate the fuel by addition to the MI error. The reference value P‹ is automatically varied by an arrangement which assesses the effect of added water on a given raw material (which varies); variations #Q in the water supply are deliberately imposed by a signal generator nd their effect #P is measured by a filter; the ratio #P/#Q is compared with a reference value and any error adjusts P‹. A change in P‹ also adjusts the belt or fan speed by addition to the signal from a comparator. The reference value (MI)<0> is also automatically adjusted in response to periodic measurements of the quality of the product, i.e. its strength and/or reducibility and/or its molecular analysis. The gain and dead band of the various regulators may be automatically adjusted according to variations in the mixture being processed and belt speed respectively.
