Abstract

1,232,307. Ferric chloride production. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA - FABRIK A.G. 11 Sept., 1968 [12 Sept., 1967], No. 43107/68. Heading C1A. Anhydrous ferric chloride is made by continuously feeding particulate materials containing metallic iron, e.g. scrap iron, into a chlorination zone at elevated temperature at a rate such that the height of the layer of material in the reaction zone above a point of introduction of the chlorine is kept as constant as possible within the range from 10 to 40 ems., the chlorine being fed at a predetermined constant rate. The bed height (and thus the reaction) is controlled by regulation of the addition of scrap with reference to either (a) the offgas temperature, or (b) the chlorine content of the offgas (which may contain an inert gas, e.g. N 2 ). In the Figure, 1 is a bin containing scrap iron, which with kiln 2 forms a system which is sealed against the outside atmosphere. Metering of the scrap iron feed to the reaction zone is carried out by an electromagnetically operated vibrating conveyer 3. Chlorine is introduced via inlets 4, into the kiln, optionally mixed with an inert gas. Offgas with vaporous FeCl 3 escapes via outlet 5 to condensers (not shown) to condense FeCl 3 . Hot scrap iron is supplied via pipe 6 when starting the kiln from scratch.
