Abstract

1363889 Discharging furnaces BRITISH GAS CORP 15 Dec 1972 [12 Nov 1971] 52738/71 Heading F4B Apparatus for extracting billets 4 from a furnace comprises a main gripper 26 and an auxiliary gripper 41. In operation the main gripper 26 is moved forward by a ram 15 and the jaws 27, 28 close on the leading billet 4, the main gripper then being retracted to withdraw the billet from the furnace. The auxiliary gripper 41 is then actuated, and plate 44 moved towards fixed plate 42 so that if the succeeding billet is stuck to the leading billet it is gripped between plates 44, 42. Rams 37, 38 on the main gripper 26 are then operated to pivot the gripper 26 about the axis of a shaft 23 to twist the leading billet relative to the suceeding billet and break the joint between them. The main gripper 26 is then returned to its normal orientation, and jaws 27, 28 are opened to release the leading billet onto a conveyer (not shown). The jaws 27, 28 are then closed and the gripper 26 advanced towards the succeeding billet, the clamping plate 44 is retracted and the main gripper 26 advanced further to push the succeeding billet back into the furnace. The main gripper 26 then returns to its rest position and the plate 44 is actuated to close the furnace.
