Abstract
811,622. Extruding. BALDWIN-LIMAHAMILTON CORPORATION. Oct. 17, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 32446/57. Class 83 (4). A metal-extrusion press has a die carrier 14 movable across the face of a platen 12 to move the extrusion die 18 into and out of its extrusion position and a die-changing mechanism 50 is disposed adjacent the carrier to remove the die therefrom. The die is retained against,a backing plate 27a in a slot 23 of the carrier 14 by a retainer 24 which may alternatively be integral with the carrier. After extrusion the billet container 10 is retracted by a hydraulic cylinder or cylinders and the extruded product severed from the discard by a saw. The carrier is then moved to the right by a hydraulic motor 16 or alternatively by a solenoid to place the die 18 adjacent a pivoted arm 73 which is raised by a compressed-air motor 74, 75 to lift the die out of its slot 23 and deposit it on an inclined plate 62, 59 where it rolls against a soft copper stop 102. Meanwhile the discard is ejected from the container into an inclined slot 25 of the carrier from which it is ejected by a pair of compressed-air operated plungers 30, Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively the discard may be pressed through the openings 20, 21 in the platen in which case removable retainer rods 26 are placed in slot 25. A number of dies 18 may be held in the changer 50 where they are inspected and lubricated by swabbing or spraying through a window 64, Fig. 2 (not shown). If a die is defective a platform 92 pivoted at 81 is raised slightly by an air motor 95, 96 into alignment with a discard platform 103 and a sliding door 108 is opened for removal of the die. For returning a die to the carrier, the platform 92 is raised to the level of an upper shoot 63 and thus lowers a platform 88 also pivoted at 81. The die falls along shoot 63 and platform 88 into the carrier slot 23, Fig. 9 (not shown). Hot billets of copper, copper alloys, including brass, aluminium or aluminium alloys may be first upset within the container in which case a solid obturating disc 51, Fig. 2 (not shown), is fed into the carrier slot 27 and used instead of the die. When extruding tubes the billets are then pierced by a mandrel. The carrier 14 may be in the form of a turret. Specification 549,880 is referred to.
