Abstract

1363628 Junction boxes HEPWORTH IRON CO Ltd 8 Nov 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 52811/70 Heading H2E A method of enclosing an underground cable joint within a two-piece junction box-one of the pieces having a filling hole or holes, comprises bringing the pieces together around the joint with the piece having the holes uppermost, pouring in a molten filler, the melting point of which is higher than the working temperature of the joint under conductive working load, until the box is completely filled, sealing the hole or holes with stoppers of the kind expanded by a screw and allowing the filler to cool, solidify and contract and leave a space within the box which accommodates expansion of the filler material when it becomes heated under working load. The box 1 consists of a cylinder of extruded clay, cracked into two pieces 2, 3 which are positioned around the joint 8 and held together by an adhesive 7 such as an epoxy or polyester resin which is also used to seal between holes 12 in the end plates of the box and the cable insulation 11. Molten bitumen 13 is poured through the holes 4 until the box is completely filled and stoppers 5 are inserted. The half cylinders may be provided with grooves for wire straps to hold the halves together either while the adhesive sets or permanently. The box may be made of two iron pieces bolted together with end plates of clay, wood or plastics. Grommets may be used to seal between the cable insulation and the box.
