Abstract

1361485 Fuel injectors, surface carburetters PLESSEY CO Ltd 10 Jan 1972 [4 Feb 1971 9 March 1971] 3981/71 and 6330/71 Heading F1B An I. C. engine comprises apparatus for injecting a solid fuel jet 6 into the cylinder, collecting the injected fuel and removing it from the cylinder without any appreciable amount of fuel being retained in the cylinder and dissipating apparatus for dissipating at least part of the jet for a predetermined time in the cylinder. Fuel from tank 13 is fed to nozzle 7 by a pump 12 at a rate proportional to engine speed so that the solid jet 6 is aimed at the open collector tube 14 from which a passage leads through a gas separator 15 to the inlet side of pump 12. Any entrained gas is led by pipe 16 to the inlet manifold. To mix fuel with the combustion air a combined oscillator and timer unit 10 controls an ultrasonic vibrator 9 which vibrates to dissipate the fuel jet 6 into a spray cone 18. With low engine loads the vibration pulses are limited to the part of the cycle immediately preceeding ignition to ensure a readily ignitable mixture in the vicinity of the spark plug gap. The fuel supply to nozzle 7 may be continuous or non-continuous or may be at a rate independent of engine speed. The collector may have a valve for minimizing gas escape via the connector during the fuel dissipation period and conduit 14 maybe undulating Fuel dissipation may be by means of a baffle. Specifications 1311879 and 1138536 are referred to.
