Abstract
1360541 Ortho-formates DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 28 Jan 1972 [29 Jan 1971] 4245/72 Heading C2C A trialkyl ester of orthoformic acid is produced by introducing an alcoholic solution of an alkali metal alcoholate and chloroform continuously and simultaneously into a reaction vessel, maintaining the reactants at 40-120‹ C. and 1-8 atm. pressure, in the absence of water and O 2 , continuously running off the products, and separating the alkali metal halide formed from the product ester continuously or non- continuously. The reactants may be fed through a reactor tube at a flow rate of 0À3-10 m./sec. or through 2 or more reactors in series with stirrers operating at 100-1000 r.p.m. The exemplified alcoholates are Na methylate and ethylate in methanol and ethanol resp. The molar ratio of chloroform to alcoholate may be 1À0 : 3 to 1À2 : 3. The halide maybe removed in a continuous centrifuge, and alcohol separated from the ester by distillation.
