Abstract

1359591 Extruding BALL CORP 1 Feb 1972 4538/72 Heading B3P A hollow composite cup-shaped article, e.g. a battery case, is made by backward impact extruding a composite aluminium-zinc slug 14, 16 using a die 12 and a punch 13 so that at least a portion of the side wall of the article is laminated with the zinc on the inside. The slug may be composed of solid metals or may be metal powder of one metal placed in depressions in a slug of the other metal and sintered. The laminations in the side wall may be arranged to vary in thickness and more than two metals may be used. The base of the article may be single layer, such as a layer of aluminium when the side wall is a zinc-aluminium laminate.
