Abstract

1359031 Machines for planting tubers, bulbs, corms and the like D V HOBBS 17 Aug 1972 [26 May 1971] 17170/71 Heading AID A wheeled chassis (not shown) hitched to a tractor and supporting a channel-section coulter (not shown), comprises an oscillating metering trough 8 divided into compartments in which potatoes are received from a storage hopper and from which potatoes are delivered in batches to the containers 12 on an endless conveyor belt 9 for subsequent discharge between the side walls of the coulter into the furrow. Potatoes pass down the reciprocating bottom plate 1 of the hopper under the conrol of a reversible rotating roller 6 and into the compartments of the metering trough 8 which then rotates to the Fig. 3 position to deposit the potatoes in the containers 12 while obstructing the hopper oulet 2. The containers 12 are made of rubber and are connected by rubber arms 16 to the conveyor belt 9. The trough 8, roller 6, plate 1 and belt 9 are driven from a single source through gearing. The depth of furrow is adjusted by mechanism on the wheels of the machine, and the furrow is closed by soil deflectors on the machine.
