Abstract
1358905 Oxidation catalyst I S C CHEMICALS Ltd 3 Oct 1972 [25 Oct 1971] 49494/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C1] An axidation catalyst comprises at least one oxidation-promoting vanadium compound and at least one alkali metal hydroxide and/or alkali metal salt supported on a material comprising at least one alkaline earth metal sulphate and silica or a siliceous material. The vanadium compound is suitably vanadium pentoxide or a precursor thereof (e.g. ammonium vanadate) or a compound formed by the reaction of a vanadium oxide with an oxide of sulphur. The alkaline earth metal sulphate is suitably calcium or barium sulphate. The siliceous material may be diatomaceous earth or silica gel. The alkali metal component may be sodium or potassium hydroxides or sulphates. The Examples describe compositions of kieselguhr, barium sulphate, ammonium vanadate, potassium sulphate, potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. The catalysts are pretreated with sulpher dioxide before use.
