Abstract

1358617 Stabilising bromine MINES DE POTASSE D ALSACE SA 5 Dec 1972 [7 Dec 1971] 56108/72 Heading A5E [Also in Division Cl] Bromine in aqueous solution is stabilised by addition of dimethyl-5, 5-hydantoin. Preferably the aqueous solution has a Br concentration of not more than 5 mg/1, and the dimethyl-5, 5-hydantoin is added in an amount of between 10 and 40 mg/l. The stabilising agent may be added to a solid bromine compound which will release bromine under the action of an oxidising agent when in contact with water, e.g. an alkali metal bromide. In such compositions an amount of dimethyl-5, 5- hydantoin which is less than 50% by weight is preferred.
