Abstract
1358212 Stapling machines NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 27 July 1972 [28 July 1971] 35061/72 Heading B4C [Also in Division B8] In a signature stitching apparatus, the thickness of each signature group fed over a saddle is checked and if it varies from a predetermined thickness, the drive to the stitching head is interrupted. The stapling heads 14 are driven from eccentric 22 through connecting rod 26 and bar 16. Between the connecting rod 26 and bar 16 is an interrupter means comprising a slotted block 28, a pivoted lever 62 and a pivotally mounted lever 38 which engages a pin 54 to form a driving connection. The signatures pass through known caliper means, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprising a fixed wheel (77) and a wheel segment (67) carried on a pivotable lever arm (70), movement of said lever arm actuating one or the other of two switches (79, 81) according to whether the signatures are too thick or too thin. Actuation of either switch energizes a solenoid 82 operating a link arm 83 to move a blocking cam 84 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 5, so that as the connecting rod 26 performs its downward movement the pivotal member 52 is moved out of engagement with the pin 54, thereby introducing a lost motion connection into the stitching head drive, the pin 54 sliding in slot 30 as the connecting rod reciprocates, being held in its lowest position, Fig. 5, by a spring (66, Fig. 6, not shown).
