In a machine for performing a solerounding operation on a shoe on a last as described in the parent Specification wherein the shoe is carried by a jack which is oscillated with a stroke automatically variable according to the size of the shoe and rotated for presentation of the shoe to a cutter head, the mechanism for determining the movement of the jack also controlling the speed at which such movements occur. As described in Specification 1,003,751 the gauging means for the size of the shoe controls the positioning of a fulcrum block 96 in a slot in a control lever 82 for controlling the movements of the jack. The positioning of the block 96 is controlled by engagemente of a cam 254 on a lug 255 with a microswitch M2. The lug 255 is attached to the same rod 240 as the fulcrum block 96 and moves therewith, while the position of the microswitch M2 is variable along a rod 234 and is directly controlled by the size of the shoe. Fixed to the lug 255 is a chain 256 which runs over a sprocket 258 secured on the end of a shaft 259 extending from a speed control unit 260. The other end of the chain is connected by a spring 262 to a portion of the frame maintaining the chain continually under tension so that the sprocket 258 is rotated directly in response to movement of the lug 255 to adjust the unit 260 according to the size of shoe to be operated upon. Rotation of the shaft 259 controls, in known manner, the size of ports through which fluid flows to a rotary hydraulic motor. The arangement is such that the speed of the motor is greater when a small shoe is being operated upon.
