Abstract

1355469 Shaving skins LUIGI RIZZI & C SpA 28 Sept 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 44724/72 Heading C6C In a machine in which a skin to be shaved is passed between a rotary shaving drum 2 and a pressure roller 1, an automatic thickness regulator reduces the spacing between roller and drum during the initial part of a shaving operation so that a skin is trimmed to a lesser thickness over its trunk region than at its end, e.g. its hind region, at which shaving is commenced. The roller 1, carried by a bracket 4 pivotally mounted at 5, is engaged by a motor-driven roller 14, whilst the drum 2, which has blades 3 arranged in left and right hand helices and is carried by a frame 18 pivotally mounted at 19, is driven at high speed by means (not shown). To open the machine for starting, a rotary valve 12 is turned to cause upward movement of a piston 9 which, through a rack and pinion 8, operates an eccentric to turn the bracket 4 clockwise about its pivot 5. Reduction of pressure in the chamber above the piston 9 is communicated through a pipe 44 to the lower end of a tapered slider 42 which, due to a connection 45 to a pressure oil supply 11, is depressed so that it moves a feeler 40 and valve member 29 to the right, thereby allowing oil under pressure to pass from a connection 24 to a pipe 26 so that a piston 21 is depressed to pivot the frame 18 anti-clockwise about its pivot 19. The slider housing 43 is carried by the frame 18 so that the movement of the latter returns the valve member 29 to neutral. The degree of separation of the drum and roller is determined by a stop screw 48 which limits the downward movement of the slider. When a skin has been inserted between the drum and roller, the valve 12 is returned to the position shown so that the piston 9 is depressed to move the roller back towards the drum, and pressure is re-established in the pipe 44 and below the slider so that the latter is restored at a controlled rate, determined by a restriction 46, to its upper position, the valve member 29 thereby admitting pressure oil to a pipe 27 to move the piston 21 upwardly and return the frame 18 and drum to a position for shaving the trunk region of the skin. This position is determined by a lever 39 having a screw-threaded connection with a sleeve 28 surrounding the valve member 29. The lever 39 may also be used to increase the shaved thickness of the skin towards the end of a shaving operation, e.g. at the head and neck end.
