ATTACHMENT FOR ROD CIGARETTE MACHINES.

In cigarette machines of the type in which cigarette or cigarette sleeves are formed into continuous rods, sections, each of the length of a cigarette, are cut in well known manner by circular knives which reciprocate in the transversal and longitudinal directions of the rod. The longitudinal reciprocating movement must be so controlled that during the cutting operation the knife will move forwardly synchronously with the rod and that in the short interval during which the rod is fedthelength of a cigarette the knife will move back to its initial position very rapidly. The control of the longitudinal reciprocating movement of the knife carrier presents difiioulties which hitherto have not been overcome by various attempted constructions. The ditficulties augment with the increase of the speed of the cigarette rod so that for the modern rapid action-machine the hitherto suggested means for controlling the longitudinal reciprocating movements of the knife have proved to be inadequate.
This invention relates to a novel means, whereby in a comparatively simple manner the motions of the knife are controlled with great precision even at the highest speed of the rod. It consists in that the motion of the means engaging the knife carrier is controlled through the medium of a member,
which is so connected to a rotary crank body as to be adjustable diametrically relative thereto, the adjustment of said member being effected automatically through a stationary cam or the like. When said body revolves the member is adjusted by the stationary cam, so that the length of the crank arm is changed. It is obvious that by correspondingly shaping the cam groove the longitudinal reciprocating movement of the knife carrier can be made so that the latter during the cutting action will move synchronously with the rod and return rapidly to its initial position atthe moment the rod has advanced the length of a cigarette.
My invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts and in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 1 is an end view of the cutter carrier; Fig. 2 ahorizontal cross section of one form of construction of my control device; Fig. 3 a vertical sec tion of a modified construction and F 4- a front view thereof.
Referring to the first form of construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a denotes a fixed fulcrum on which is rotatively mounted an oscillatory angle lever b. To one arm of this lever is connected a rod 0 by means of its forked part rotatively engaging a pivot (Z carried by a shoe 6. The rod 0 has connected to it in well known manner the cutter carrier 011 which are supported the guide sleeves 0 through which the cigarette rod R passes. The circularknife M is supported by a lever L from the carriero in well known manner so that it can be moved also'transversely of the rod to perform the cutting operation. This shoe 6 is slidably mounted in a longitudinal slot 9 of the lever b and is adjustable therein through the. medium of a screw spindle f.: By'the adjustment of the shoe or block 6 the mesne speed of the movement of the knife carrier transmitted to the latter through said rod 0 can be varied.
The other arm of the lever b is also providedwith a longitudinal slot it in which is slidably borne a block or shoe 2'. The latter is carried by a crank pin which projects from a member Z slidably mounted in a diametrically extending groove m of a crank disc n.- This disc n is carried by the shaft 0 driven through bevel gears from a suitable On its oppov or block Z to reciprocate in the diametrical groove m of the disk n. This reciprocating motion will be transmitted to the block 71 by the crank pin Z1 projecting from the shoe 1, in consequence of which the oscillatory movement of the lever b will be cont-rolled according to the shape of the cam groove 1" which may be designed so that the rod 0 and therefore the cutter carrier 0? will advance synchronously and longitudinally with the rod during the cutting operation and on the completion of the latter return rapidly into initial position at the moment the rod has advanced a distance equal to the length of a cigarette.
-It is clear that the cam groove 7 can be shaped to suit diflerent requirements and that in some casesmerely an adjustment of the cam disc will be suflioient Without chang ing the disc itself.
