Abstract

1357796 Tube expanding DR ING KOENIG AG 8 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 32088/71 Heading B3J [Also in Division F2] A plug for closing a bore in a workpiece comprises a sleeve having a bore, the sleeve being destined to be inserted in the workpiece bore, the outer surface of the plug sleeve being equipped with anchoring means for engaging the material of the confining wall of the workpiece bore, and an expander member which can be driven from the outer end of the plug sleeve inwardly into the plug bore to a final position within the bore so as to progressively effect a local plastic deformation and radial expansion of the plug sleeve during its movement to the final position, said expander member posessing a rounded or ball like configuration at least in the region intended to bear against said bore of the sleeve, and said sleeve bore having an approximately cylindrical configuration. In one form the anchoring means comprises a plurality of annular ribs (Fig. 1) and the expander member 2 is a ball, the ribs undergoing a rolling action to bite into the wall of the workpiece bore. The expander need not be a sphere per se but may be a bulging part of a suitable tool. Particular constructions of plug having ribs only over the central portion of their lengths are described. The expander may be retained at the outer end of the plug by an inturned end 3. The end 9 of the plug may be conical with the narrow end of the cone pointing towards the ball. The end of the workpiece bore may be widened to accommodate the plug, a bevel 5 seating against the shoulder between the workpiece bore and the widened portion to prevent movement while expanding the plug. In one form (Fig. 5, not shown) the end 9 is apertured and the opposite end of the plug is rolled in after expansion to hold the ball against the aperture. A sealing paste or rubber ring may be interposed between the rolled end and the ball. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) an external collar at one end of the plug engages the end of the bore, and the shoulder 5 is omitted.
