Abstract

1364509 Drying or cooling powder or granular materials BUSS AG 12 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 52612/71 Headings F4G and F4U Dusty, powdery or granular material is continuously dried or cooled by passing it suspended in a gas stream through a tangential inlet 7 into a cylindrical treatment chamber 1 having a cylindrical outlet chamber 6 from which gas and dried material is withdrawn via tangential outlet 8. Heavy (i.e. wetter and larger) particles assume the largest-radius orbit possible and hence have longer residence times in the treatment chamber 1 than light particles. The incoming wet particles progressively displace the drying particles towards the centre where the radial gas flow entrains them for discharge at 8. The cover 4 is screwed to the wall 2 of the chamber 1 for easy dismantling for cleaning, the wear plate 3 is a replaceable insert, and the wall 2 is protected by a replaceable liner (not shown). An upward extension 9 of the container 6 shields the inlet 7. Air inlets may be provided near the inlet 7 and baffles at the lower end of the chamber 1 for directing particles inwards, and the chamber 1 may be surrounded with a heating or cooling jacket. The dryer may be followed by a cyclone, or by a similar dryer in series.
