Abstract

Subaqueous buildings; piles.-Vertical cylindrical caissons for sinking bridge and like foundations, or for forming a permanent part of the foundations, consist of channel, Z, I, and like sections a, b which interlock, for example by means of members c. The sliding joint consists of flat surfaces radial to the axis of the cylinder and at least three inches wide. The piles may be driven a short distance, adjacent, piles being alternately driven. In the form shown in Fig. 2, bolts d, sliding in short slots in the piles, form the interlocking-members.
