Abstract

1357599 Sanitary appliances R EGLI 11 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 52431/71 Heading A4N [Also in Divisions G1 and H3] A sanitary appliance, such as a urinal has electrodes 13, 14 which detect the presence of, for example, urine and cause the appliance to be flushed. This is achieved by a reduction of the resistance between the electrodes in the presence of fluid, producing a first signal which is detected by a sonning circuit 24, amplified by an amplifier 25, and which energizes a relay 27 if the drop in resistance persists for a predetermined period of time governed by a delay circuit 26. The relay operates a monostable multivibrator 28 which, on receiving a second signal caused by the deenergization of the relay on termination of liquid flow, causes a relay 29 to operate a valve 30 and flush the bowl. Alternatively the resistance of the electrode itself may be reduced on passage of liquid. Two electrodes may be used, one above the level of the liquid 15 in the siphon 12, and one below, or both electrodes may be above the water level; or a single temperature sensitive electrode may be used.
