Abstract

1396837 Wells &c DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc 21 Feb 1973 [3 March 1972] 8588/73 Heading E1F Apparatus for adding drilling fluid e.g. mud to a well when the level of mud in the well is decreased due to a change in conditions in the well, comprises a drilling-mud tank 32, means for discharging mud in the tank into the well in response to the occurrence of a predetermined event in the drilling operation, e.g. tripping, which is independent of measurement of the level of drilling mud in the well, and means for disabling the discharging means in response to the drilling mud reaching a predetermined level (141), Fig. 1 (not shown), in the well. Mud is normally circulated from a pit 7 via a pump 8, drill string (4), the annulus between the drill string and a casing (2), and a return line 11. The mud tank 32 is filled from the pit via lines 37, 38, pump 39 and line 48, the tank being provided with an overflow 33. Mud is discharged from the tank 32 via lines 36, 38, pump 39 and lines 47, 49 into the well in response to predetermined amount of change in the hook load associated with the drill string, the hook load change being detected by a sensor (21), Fig. 2 (not shown), on the deadline 16b. When said predetermined lever (141) in the well is achieved mud flow through the return line 11 is detected by means of a paddle switch 83 and the discharge from the tank 32 is ceased. A float 62 attached to a cable 61 enables the level of mud in the tank 32 to be maintained between minimum and maximum values by cooperation with switches 64 and 65. The rate of discharge or filling of the tank is measured by means of triggers 71 on the cable 61 passing over a switch 70, the output of the switch 70 being connected to a counter (89), Fig. 5 (not shown), to determine the rate of volumetric change in the tank, and is compared with minimum and maximum electrical signals to determine mud loss or gain in the well. Electrical circuitry is disclosed, Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown).
