Abstract
1,058,110. Boring earth; wells. PAN AMERICAN PETROLEUM CORPORATION. Nov. 5, 1964 [Feb. 7, 1964], No. 45226/64. Heading E1F. Apparatus for conducting operations in an underwater well comprises a floating vessel positioned directly above the well, an elongated element extending from the vessel into the well, sensing means positioned to bear against the element when the vessel is laterally displaced a predetermined distance and to provide an indication of the displacement. The element is a drill string 28. which passes through a rotary table 30 on the vessel 11. The indication of the displacement is a measure of the stress in the string and indicates when the vessel should be relocated to maintain the stress in the string at a safe level. The well 13 has a surface casing 18 supporting a conductor pipe 16 including blow-out preventers 21, a spool 22 and a flexible joint 26 and connected to the vessel by cables 17. The spool encloses a sleeve 31 and carries the sensing means 23, the arrangement being that displacement of the vessel causes the drill string to engage the sleeve which is caused to load one or more of the sensing means. The sensing means each comprise a compression member mounting strain gauges attached to a bridge circuit provided with an indicator or recorder, or a plunger capable of acting on a fluid connected to a pressure indicator, the indicators being calibrated to show displacement of the vessel. In modifications the sensing means may be located in or adjacent the rotary table, or at the top of the conductor pipe.
