Abstract

1357487 Web accumulators WEAN UNITED Inc 31 July 1972 [5 Aug 1971] 35674/72 Heading B8R A web accumulator comprises inner and outer annular roll cages composed of guide rollers 15, 13 respectively, means for feeding a web, e.g. steel strip, into contact with the inner surface of the outer cage to form an outer set of convolutions, means for delivering the web from the inside of an inner set of convolutions formed on the inner cage, the two spaced sets being connected by a reverse web loop, the inner cage rollers 15 being supported in bearing assemblies (31), Fig. 4 (not shown), each including a slot 33 through which the journal (35) of a respective outer cage roller 13 extends, the journals (35) being supported in further bearing assemblies (37), and means being provided for moving the bearing assemblies (31), (37) radially of the roll cages. The web feed means comprises pinch rolls 22, 23 and a feed trough 25 connected at one end to the uppermost roller of the outer cage for movement therewith and at its opposite end to a vertically slidable carriage for adjusting the inclination of the trough. The delivery means comprises an inclined roller (17), Fig. 2 (not shown), inside the inner cage for delivering the web in a spiral from the side of the cage to pinch rolls (19). The rollers of the inner cage are freely rotatable and are of smaller diameter than the outer cage rollers 13, the latter rollers being driven individually by motors (39) and (61). Adjustment of the radial positions of the bearing assemblies is effectedby jacks 43, (44) Fig. 3 (not shown) connected by universally jointed shafts (52a) 52, to electric motors (54), 55. Some of therollers 13 may have triangular, lateral web guides (65), adjustable by jacks.
