Abstract

1357108 Profiling tube ends BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 13 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39147/70 Headings B3B and B3T A machine for profiling the end of a tube comprises a hollow body portion 4 in which a spindle 1 is rotatable and axially displaceable in recirculatory ball bearing units 7a, 7b intermediate the ends of the spindle, one end of the spindle having a gear 15 thereon which engages a gear 26 on a motor 28 for effecting rotation of the spindle in the body 4. The gear 15 is carried on a splined end 11 of the spindle 1 which is engaged with a screwed plug 21 in an end cap 10 secured to the body portion 4, the gear being supported on the splines by a recirculatory type ball bearing which permits the rotary drive to the spindle and also axial displacement of the spindle therethrough by screwing in and out of the plug 21 in the cap 10. The other end of the spindle carries an axially positioned mandrel 3a for supporting the end of a tube to be profiled and radially cutting tools 3 which are preset to the size of the tube. The tube 31 to be profiled is held in collet chuck carried on a head portion 6 constituting an end portion of the body 4, the cutting tools rotating about the end of the tube 31 within a cavity 6a in the head. The drive motor 28 in the embodiment described is an air motor and the air exhausted from the motor can be directed to effect cooling of the tube being machined.
