Abstract
933,087. Making internally ribbed tubes; rifling. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Jan. 19, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 1987/62. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (3). A method of internally ribbing a tube comprising smoothing the bore of said tube and draw boring a uniform helical groove in the internal surface of the wall of the tube. A helical groove 21 is formed in a smooth bored tube 20 of carbon or alloy steel by a spiral, three fluted tipped tool 50 fitted to a tool-bar 43 and drawn through the rotating tube in a machine 30. The tool shank 51 is a few thousandths smaller than the bore of the tube and acts as a pilot diameter. The machine 30 comprises a tube holder means 32 having a rotatable hollow spindle 34 incorporating a chuck assembly 38, tube rests 40 on a support 39, a carriage 41 gear driven by a lead screw 42a to which is coupled one end of the toolbar 43, a plurality of movable toolbar supports 44, associated drive motors 35, 60, mounted on a frame 31. A clutch 68 engages the driving relationship of the spindle 34 and leadscrew 42a and a rapid carriage return means 71 is driven by a rotor 72 through a clutch 75. The tool 50 is fitted to the toolbar 43 which passes through and protrudes from the end of the tube remote from the carriage 41. Cutting lubricant is pumped through the toolbar 43 and the passageways 59 of the tool to flush out the chips through the machined back end of the tube. A second machining pass may be carried out using a tool similar to the tool 50 but having a dummy lead section to align the tool with the existing groove. In a modification, tubes having a diameter of less than 1.0 inch are bored out as above from oversize tubes and the finish machined tube is finally subjected to external radially applied compressive forces to reduce its internal and external diameters without changing the wall thickness, with a corresponding increase in its length and elongation of the grooves 211 and ribs 22<SP>1</SP>.
