Abstract

1355975 Direction finding; television G PUSCH 29 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 30421/71 Headings H4D and H4F A sector of space is monitored for infra red or laser beams, e.g. as being indicative of approaching missiles, by an arrangement comprising a plurality of lenses 2, each projecting and detected radiation in a respective small solid angle portion of the sector, on to a corresponding detector 4, the detectors being arranged in an array corresponding to the arrangement of the lenses and each lens comprising an objective 2 and a field lens 3. The objectives, the field lenses and the detectors can be arranged and mounted as part of a spherical or cylindrical surface, the inner surfaces of the lenses being continuous. A slotted or otherwise apertured shutter 6 rotates in front of the field lenses to give an A.C. content to the detector outputs. A central spherical or cylindrical, dry ice, liquid gas or thermoelectric cooling system 15 can be used. Diaphragms can be provided for each detector to reject unwanted radiation. The detector outputs can provide a C.R.T. display of the infra-red or laser beam distribution in the monitored sector.
