Abstract
1,156,323. Echo sounding. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Sept., 1966 [23 June, 1965], No. 26511/65. Heading H4D. In a sonar system, echoes received from different ones of a plurality of discrete directions unequally spaced throughout a predetermined sector are displayed in sequence during respective successive ones of a regular sequence of periods. For locating fish on or near the bottom FD of the water or charting a non-conformal plan of the bottom an acoustic pulse is transmitted simultaneously in seventy directions, lying within a sector whose plane is vertical and whose axis is downwardly inclined from horizontal, by means of an array of seventy respective transmitting/receiving transducers located at the focal surface of an acoustic reflector and coupled to transmitting/receiving circuitry. The directions are chosen such that equal slant-range increments occur between adjacent pulse paths SA, SB, SC, SD from a ship S, carrying the sonar, to the bottom; echoes received by the respective transducers then occur in a regular sequence and are displayed on an electrochemical recorder. The recorder (Figs. 2 and 3) comprises a stylus (28) moved. over a chart (22) by a belt (19). The belt drive drum (18) carries a brush (20) which is connected to the stylus and scans, during one traverse of the stylus over the chart, seventy commutatorcontacts (16) to which are applied the echo signals from the seventy directions respectively. The acoustic pulse transmission is triggered in synchronism with the recorder operation, and the depth range from which echoes are recorded may be selected by adjusting this synchronization or employing additional brushes which scan commutator-contacts (16) adjacent whichever contact is in engagement with brush (20) at any instant. Compensation for pitch (for a forward-looking sonar) or roll (for a side-looking sonar) of the ship may be achieved, to a first order, by adjusting the angular position of the contacts (16) relative to the brush (20) or brushes.
