Abstract
1,156,322. Sonar systems. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 June, 1966 [23 June, 1965], No. 26510/65. Heading H4D. Apparatus for indicating from which direction a sound wave echo is received comprises a plurality of elements arranged at or near the focal region of a spherical or circularly cylindrical reflector such that each receives echoes from a different direction within an angular sector, respective echo - detection channels coupled to the elements, and means for providing a direction representation in accordance with whichever channel detects an echo. In the sonar system of Fig. 1 a linear array of seventy transducers 1 mounted at or near the focal surface of reflector 2 can receive echoes from seventy directions simultaneously. The transducers are coupled to individual transmitting/ receiving channels 3, each of which comprises a switch 11 for applying a pulse of carrier-wave to the transducer from gated amplifier 12 and for passing any received echo through automatic gain-controlled amplifier 13 to display unit 8. The transducers 1 may be pulsed concurrently, sequentially, or with different carrier frequencies, the transmission being controlled by a unit 6 which also provides synchronizing signals to display unit 8. Display 8 may be (a) a cathode-ray tube to which the outputs of receiving channels 3 are connected in sequence, giving an intensity-modulated type-B range/ direction display, (b) a row of recording pens (20), (Fig. 3) respectively coupled to the receiving channels 3 and producing marks against a time-base provided by relative movement of a chart (21) or (c) a row of neon or gallium-arsenide lamps (22) (Fig. 4) coupled to respective receiving channels 3 and moved together over a rectangular display area (23). The transducer array of Fig. 1 may be used to provide a sector of search having its plane horizontal or, for searching a region of water adjacent the sea bed, having its plane vertical. In a modification (not shown), a two-dimensional array of transducers may be used instead of the linear array to provide a two-dimensional display of targets at a given range. The acoustic signals transmitted in this case may be continuous wave instead of pulsed, and the range at which targets are " in focus " may be selected by adjusting the position of the array with respect to the reflector 2. A stop, positioned at the centre of curvature of reflector 2, may be used to ensure uniform acoustic illumination across the effective aperture of the system. Display techniques involving real or simulated stereoscopic effects may be used. In further modifications, a single transmitting unit may energize all transducers 1, a separate transmitting transducer not associated with reflector 2 may be used, and overlap of the side-lobes of adjacent transducer beams may be reduced by appropriate shaping of the transducers 1 or reflector 2.
