882,741. Infra-red measuring apparatus. ALBISWERK ZURICH A.G. Jan. 6, 1960 [Jan. 10, 1959], No. 504/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 40(7). In apparatus comprising an infra-red detecfor and optical means for focusing radiation on the detector, the area of the sensitive surface of the detector and the optical system are so dimensioned that the ratio of the diameter of the minimum resolvable focused scan, i.e. the diffraction disc, to the area of the sensitive surface lies between the limits 1 and 0.1, and preferably between 1 and 0.3. It is stated that the invention achieves optimum efficiency of the radiation detection, an explanation being advanced in the case thermo-couple detectors with reference to Figs. 2, and 3 (not shown). The invention is applied to a detector for locating a distant body, e.g. an aeroplane, in which radiation from the body is focused into the plane of a network of detectors by means of an optical system comprised of concave mirror, a convex mirror and a lens.
